Advantages and Disadvantages of Dental Veneers

Dental veneers which are also known as porcelain veneers are thin, custom-built shells of tooth-colored materials used to cover the front surface of teeth with the objective of enhancing a person’s look. These veneers are attached to the front of the teeth to improve their colour, shape, size, or length.

Dental veneers are made either from porcelain or resin composite materials. Unlike resin veneers, porcelain veneers can give more natural looking teeth and they are not stained easily. But resin veneers are thinner and before fixing it, only a small part of the tooth surface is needed to be removed. Talk to your dentist about these two options, and he will advise on what is suitable for you

With Veneers, dentist normally resolve the problems of discoloured  or stained teeth, worn down teeth, chipped or broken teeth, misaligned teeth and teeth with gaps between them. You have to visit your dentist three times to complete the process of getting a dental veneer. The first one is for the consultation and other two are to make and fix the veneers.

There are several advantages of dental veneers. The most important one is veneers can give more natural looking teeth. Porcelain veneers will not get stained and gum tissue accepts porcelain well. If the patient has discoloured teeth, the dentist can select a colour for porcelain veneer to make them look whiter. Actually Veneers provide a conservative method to improve a tooth’s colour and shape. Unlike crowns, veneers normally don’t call for the extensive shaping before the procedure, but veneers still provide a durable and appealing option.

Dental Veneers have their disadvantages as well. Firstly, this process cannot be reverted. Veneers are more expensive than composite resin bonding. If the veneers are chipped or cracked, they normally cannot be repaired. The enamel of the tooth has been removed before bonding the veneers and now your tooth may become more sensitive to hot and cold foods and beverages. There’s a chance that the colour of the veneers may not precisely match the colour of your natural teeth. Besides, the veneer’s colour cannot be changed once they are fixed into your teeth. If you wish to get your teeth whitened, you have to get it done prior to getting veneers. The chances are rare, but veneers can fall off. To reduce the risk of this taking place, avoid biting your nails, chewing on pencils, ice, or any other hard objects. And do not put too much of pressure on your teeth in any other way. Don’t forget, even teeth with veneers can decay, and you may need to get complete coverage of the tooth with a crown. Veneers are not recommended for people who are not in good oral health, especially those who have decay, active gum disease, and weakened teeth.

Dental Veneers are designed to last for 5 to 10 years. You will have to replace the veneers after that time. You do not need to take extra care for these dental veneers. If you carry on your normal good oral hygiene practices with brushing and flossing that should be enough. Although porcelain veneers are considered to be stain resistant, your dentist may ask you to stay away from foods and beverages like coffee, tea, and red wine that cause stains.
